This workshop introduces 101 Chorale Preludes: German Organ Works of the 17th and 18th Centuries, a new publication by Wayne Leupold Editions, edited by John Brock and Quentin Faulkner. This volume contains a significant body of chorale-based works by North, Central, and South German composers appropriate for study and for performance in recitals and worship services. The collection is both a practical and a pedagogical one, as it includes a lengthy preface discussing period-appropriate performance practices.
With this material and the use of the pieces in a graded order of difficulty, it can be used as a progressive introduction to the performance of 17th- and 18th-century German organ music, in effect a quasi-method for German Baroque technique and style. The workshop will include examples from the collection’s various genres of chorale preludes and an overview of information included in the preface.
