This presentation serves to explore organ pedagogy with the intent of encouraging more organists to become teachers. Questions concerning lesson plans, choosing music, and accommodating the student’s needs are likely to arise in the minds of prospective teachers. The presentation will begin with how to establish a relationship and ways to maintain the student’s interests. Next, an exploration of the student’s abilities and forming short-term lesson goals will be discussed. The presentation will conclude with approaches to learning a new piece and practice methods. Published materials consisting of organ repertoire, hymn playing, and improvisation topics will be included as musical examples. Information in this workshop can be applied to teachers working with students of all ages and backgrounds.
